This 12,000 sf home in Greenwich, CT bridges the gap between traditional architecture and contemporary aesthetics. The owners shared their vision of an efficient and spacious home that would serve the needs of their large family and hired Brenner Builders in 2004 to craft it.
The striking balance of simple lines and exquisite craftsmanship is evident outdoors from the combination of whitewashed clapboard and vertical cedar siding to the precisely executed Connecticut stone chimneys and
bluestone patios. Contributing to the contemporary feel are full-height, double hung windows that are banked on every side of the house, providing light and views throughout.
An 11' wide covered front porch heralds the entrance to this home where the foyer boasts bluestone floors with radiant heat and leads to a window-filled living room with bluestone mantle to the left and a bookcase-lined library to the right, both with wide plank, deep walnut floors. A dining room with French doors to a wrap-around bluestone terrace is open to the spacious family kitchen, an informal eating area, and a family room, all with full height v-groove bead board paneled walls. The family room is outfitted with custom built-in study areas for the children, as well as a second bluestone fireplace.
Beyond the family room is a TV room with custom media storage. A mudroom, outfitted with heated exercise room flooring, individual closets for family members, laundry facilities, and a central, double-sided bench, is accessible from both the freestanding garage (via an exterior patio) or from the interior living areas. The two-car garage also serves as a pool house and includes an outdoor kitchen, changing room, and shower, and an indoor cedar bath and second changing room.
Two staircases provide access to the second floor, where five family bedrooms with individual study areas are clustered around common rooms and three shared baths. The master suite includes custom his and hers closets. The bathroom is outfitted with sleek, teak cabinetry surrounding the Onzen soaking tub and along one wall for storage, all custom-milled by Brenner Millworks. A glass tiled shower and radiant heat below stone floors add to the serene atmosphere of this adult space. A home office and adjacent screened porch complete this floor.
An expansive basement includes space for mechanicals, storage, laundry, fitness equipment, recreation, and a second mudroom. Special features such as exercise room flooring throughout and custom-built sporting gear storage make this space efficient and user-friendly.
