This 11,000-square-foot spec house was designed and built in 2005 to nestle into its two-acre property as if it had been there for generations. The classic cedar shake and stone exterior, graced with French doors along the front and back, is in keeping with that of its neighborhood near the Long Island Sound. The covered front porch and the dormered second floor offer winter views of the sea.
The circular driveway gracefully leads to a cobblestone parking terrace below a columned portico with beadboard ceiling. Architectural details continue from the portico to the porch, where circular windows, reminiscent of those salvaged from ships, flank the main entrance. The two-story entry welcomes guests in a grand, country style, thanks to a sweeping staircase that wraps the room in delicate millwork.
Distinctive detail is the hallmark of this home where a bowed glass and steel window encircles a stairway that winds from a mahogany-paneled gentleman’s study to a billiards room below. A wine cellar and adjoining tasting area with Tuscan-style stone floor, a state-of-the art media room, a powder room, and a kitchenette complete the lower level entertainment areas.
On the main level of this fully-automated home, the expansive kitchen is open to the family room with a cozy fireplace and custom built-ins. The kitchen, featuring a La Cornue range and vintage-style tile work, has direct access to the butler’s pantry as well as to the hexagonal breakfast room.
Just outside the kitchen, we built a home hub, a center for family communications and workstations, that opens to a casual, yet stylish mudroom and family entrance. A formal living room and elegant dining room, both featuring custom millwork, and a housekeeper’s suite are also located on this floor.
Upstairs, there are five bedrooms and four full baths, including a sumptuous master suite. A marble fireplace, trimmed with custom molding, and a vaulted, paneled ceiling set an elegant tone for the homeowners’ domain.
The bedroom leads to dressing areas and a luxurious bathroom in which marble tile and custom cabinetry for his and hers washing areas were installed. Accessible by two open staircases, this upper level is outfitted with an exercise room with a Juliet balcony overlooking the front yard, a laundry room, and a playroom that opens to a mahogany terrace with glorious views of the backyard.
